Let your doctor know, or seek medical attention right away.

Prevention

The good news about blood clots is that they are preventable. Once you consider your risk factors and learn the signs and symptoms, then take a look at your family history. If you learn that there is a history of blood clots in your family, tell your doctor and let other family members know.

One important way to prevent blood clots is to not be immobile for too long. If you're confined to a bed either in a hospital or at home (especially following hip or knee surgery), talk to your doctor about your options for blood clot prevention. And if you've been sitting for a long time, including in a car or plane seat, get up and move! Stand up, stretch your legs, and try to take a brief walk every couple of hours. Try this simple exercise to keep the blood flowing.

Treatment

If you do develop blood clots, your physician can help you navigate the best treatment choices for your specific situation. Anticoagulants, or so-called "blood thinners," are commonly prescribed. (Note that these medications don't actually "thin" the blood; what they do is slow the body's ability to form new clots and stop existing clots from getting bigger.

Other treatment options can include compression stockings, thrombolytic therapy, and vena cava filters. The day is also a time to bring awareness of social and health issues that affect senior citizens – like veins!

Paying attention to venous health is an important aspect of successful aging – and one that has historically gone untreated. Many seniors have been told that heavy, aching legs are a normal part of aging, but that’s often not the case. There are solutions for venous insufficiency that make people feel better, no matter what their age.

Venous insufficiency occurs when healthy veins become damaged and allow the backward flow of blood into the lower extremities. This pooling of blood can lead to a feeling of heaviness, aching, and can cause skin changes, such as spider veins or a brown, woody appearance of the lower legs.

Seniors’ veins respond differently to everyday stress compared to that of a younger person’s because vein walls are primarily made of collagen. As the body ages, a decrease in the production of collagen causes the veins to become more brittle and the valves more likely to fail, especially in the superficial veins. Thus, there is a higher incidence of varicose veins in the elderly population.

Additionally, the skin begins to lose its elasticity and doesn’t respond to stress the way it once did. And because skin is the “end organ” of venous disease, ulcers can occur as a result of damaged veins.

Some seniors might think that “vein stripping” is the only option. While it was the go-to procedure for many years, treatment of venous disease today is vastly different. Breakthroughs in phlebology and new approaches to treatment involve less time and less pain, and they are overwhelmingly successful over the long term when performed by an experienced specialist.

The risk-benefit ratio makes treatment an ideal option for seniors. Although seniors have a 50% greater chance of suffering from vein disease, they have the same success with modern treatment options as anyone else.
connect@veinhealthcare.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11443588299157001885noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4979907636765296728.post-61083422487655013082021-05-28T11:42:00.003-07:002021-05-28T11:42:26.364-07:00June is Men's Health Month

Men don’t get varicose veins, right? This year, June 14-20 is Men’s Health Week, a chance for men to take stock of their health and habits – including varicose veins and other vein problems often associated with women.

Here are the facts: Anatomically, men’s leg veins are no different from women’s veins. Looking at a leg ultrasound, one would be hard-pressed to tell the difference between a man’s and a woman’s legs.

Everyone’s veins carry blood from the legs and arms back to the heart. The blood in the legs travels up against gravity, so when the valves in the veins become damaged, blood “leaks” back into the legs and creates a “pooling” effect.

Who has the highest risk of getting varicose veins? Heredity plays a strong role, so look at your family history for clues. Lifestyle is also a significant risk factor: does your job require you to stand for long periods of time, or do you sit at your desk all day? Advanced age or previous leg trauma can also affect your venous health.

Even men who are athletic are susceptible to venous (vein) disease. Sometimes men with vein problems misinterpret their symptoms, mistaking the pains of venous disease for a strained or pulled muscle.

Like any chronic medical condition, varicose veins get worse with time, and the longer one waits, the more extensive the condition could become. Many men go to their doctors for the first time when they get venous ulcers, a problem too painful to ignore.

Treatment can stop the progression of venous disease and its complications for those in all stages of disease, however, early intervention is best and provides the most improved quality of life. But for those men (or women) struggling with late-stage symptoms it is still possible to restore health. Today's vein treatments are minimally invasive, cause very little pain, and can be accomplished quickly right in a physician’s office.

The key for men is to get evaluated as soon as the symptoms become apparent or they suspect there’s a problem.

Schedule your evaluation and learn how treatment could improve your health and quality of life.
connect@veinhealthcare.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11443588299157001885noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4979907636765296728.post-88619107757748937382021-04-28T06:29:00.009-07:002021-04-28T07:17:06.429-07:00Year of the Nurse

In 1993, the American Nurses Association (ANA) declared May 6 as the start of National Nurses Week. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Joshua B. is a chef. Years in the restaurant business have kept him on his feet for extended periods of time, which— combined with a family history of varicose veins— was a recipe for unhealthy legs.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">“I started getting varicose veins in high school, <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">but as unsightly as they were, they never really bothered me,” said Joshua.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">As the New Hampshire native got older, his veins <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">got worse. They continued to get bigger and stay <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">swollen for longer periods of time. Even crawling on <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">the floor with his young kids was hard because of the <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">varicose veins on his knees. But the self-proclaimed <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">“tough guy” continued to live with the discomfort. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">When he was about 27 years old, however, he <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">started to experience undeniable medical issues.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The skin covering Joshua’s veins gradually got <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">thinner and thinner, especially on the insides of his <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">ankles. Eventually the skin got so thin on the inside <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">of his right ankle that it ruptured and began spraying <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">blood “like a squirt gun coming out of the side of <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">his foot,” as Joshua described it.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">“It was scary. I didn’t know what to do, so I <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">rushed to the emergency room where they gave <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">me a Novocaine injection and stitches that stayed <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">in for a week,” he said.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">That was the first emergency. Ten months later <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">another bleeder opened up higher up on Joshua’s <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">right leg. He finally began to take the problem seriously
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">and went to two different doctors for treatment.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">One physician encouraged vein stripping. The <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">other physician advised against it but offered no alternatives. Joshua was confused: “I never really <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">had a clear path of what to do.”
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Finally, Joshua found his way to the Vein <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Healthcare Center. An ultrasound revealed the source <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">of the problem, and Joshua worked with D<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">r. Cindy Asbjornsen on a treatment plan. He <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">proceeded to have endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">on his right leg first, followed by his left leg two <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">months later. Dr. Asbjornsen followed both EVLA <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">procedures with sclerotherapy. As Joshua put it, the <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">EVLA “dams up the river,” and then the sclerotherapy <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">gets rid of the other streams leading up to it.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Joshua was nervous before the procedures, but <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">found that it was a lot easier than he expected. Although his<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> goal was to restore healthy venous return
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">in his legs, he’s been surprised by how much <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">more comfortable and confident he feels.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">“I’m not as apprehensive about wearing shorts <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">and showing off my legs now, because before they <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">were gnarly and bumpy,” he said. “They’re not <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Tom Brady’s legs yet, but they look much better <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">than they did.”
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Overall, the experience has been an educational <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">one for Joshua. Once he really understood what <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">varicose veins were and what his specific problem <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">was, he couldn’t wait to fix it. In fact, he wishes a <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">vein exam could be part of every general physical.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">“It’s a quick thing to look at someone’s legs to <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">see if there are varicosities. There are a lot of <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">possible treatments, and the earlier you start the better off you are.”
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">If your legs feel achy or tired, it may be a venous issue. Best to check with a vein specialist for a thorough evaluation. (See tip #10 below!)
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">In the meantime, there are things you can do to alleviate your discomfort and perhaps even prevent your symptoms from progressing:
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">1. Elevate. Elevate your legs above your heart <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">as often as possible -- <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">for as long as 30 minutes or as briefly as three minutes. The best time is after you have been standing or after a hot shower.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">2. Wear loose-fitting clothing. Avoid tight-fitting clothes around your legs and waist. It will help by not impeding circulation in your lower body.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> 3. Avoid high heels. High-heeled shoes shorten the muscles in the back of your leg and prevent deep veins from operating at their full capacity.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">4. Sit properly. Focus on good posture and avoid crossing your legs or sitting in ways that can compress veins for prolonged periods.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">5. Walk. Walking causes the rhythmic contraction of calf muscles and helps promote blood flow to the heart. Walk at least 30 minutes every day – all at once, or in shorter increments.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">6. Take a break. Take frequent walking breaks to avoid sitting or standing for periods of more than two hours.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">7. Wear compression stockings. Wearing compression stockings purchased from your pharmacy will help promote the flow of blood when you are flying, on your feet for long periods, or carrying heavy loads.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"> 8. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Don’t smoke. Smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke constricts veins and affects overall circulation.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">9. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Know your history. Women with a family history of vein disorders, or those who have relatives with varicose veins, should wear compression stockings during menarche and menopause, and during pregnancy – most importantly, during the first trimester.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">10. See a vein specialist. Contact a board certified phlebologist for a screening and evaluation, or to find out more about risks, prevention, and treatment of venous disease.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

But is it safe?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In our latest issue of Vein Health News, we take a look at these businesses where aesthetics meets medicine. We also offer some good advice on how to make sure that you're not wasting your money, or worse, putting your health at risk.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">As a Nurse Practitioner, Nicole Strout, NP, supports Dr. Cindy Asbjornsen, founder of the Vein Healthcare Center. Nikki joined the VHC team after providing care at an orthopedic practice in Portland. She attended nursing school as an undergraduate at Marshall University in West Virginia before receiving her Masters in Nursing from Walden University in Minnesota.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">In addition to spending time with her husband, a fisherman in Alaska, and their three sons, ages 5, 3, and 9 months, Nikki enjoys the Maine outdoors – including going out on her father-in-law’s lobster boat! <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">Q: How do you help patients at VHC?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">A: I meet with new patients and review their medical history as well as give them a physical exam. We spend a lot of time discussing their health goals.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">Q: Why is that first-visit conversation so important?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">A: I work closely with Dr. Asbjornsen to determine the best treatment plan for each person, so I want to give her the most complete picture of each patient’s situation as possible. I also want every patient to feel heard, so I really tune in and listen to what their complaints are. One of the first physicians I ever worked for taught me that 90 percent of the time, the patient is going to tell me what’s wrong with them. In my experience I’ve found that that’s the best way to develop a relationship – and it streamlines their care.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">Q: What is it like working with Dr. Asbjornsen?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">A: She is one of the kindest, most patient physicians I’ve ever worked with. People sometimes feel that it’s hard to find someone in healthcare that you can trust and develop a good relationship with. Dr. Asbjornsen tries to do that, and so do I. So does the rest of the staff.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">Q: Why are you a good fit for VHC?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">A: When I was an RN, before I received my Masters in Nursing, I worked in vein treatment, so I have that background. I also like that patients with vein issues and venous insufficiency tend to be more involved in their treatment and more proactive in their approach to health. Plus, I love helping people, advising them and getting them on the right path so they can stay active.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">Q: What do you like the most about vein care?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">A: I think that it’s so rewarding to help people who come in with pain but can’t figure out the underlying cause. We help them figure it out, and our procedures and help with their symptoms and get them back to their baseline health and feeling so much better.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">Q: What do you do when you’re not working or taking care of three young kids?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">A: My sanity is running! That’s how I keep my mind functioning well.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Standing desks are all the rage at workplaces now. But are they actually good for your health?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Dr. Cindy Asbjornsen says that specific to vein health, <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">the <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">short answer is: maybe.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In 2015, a meta-analysis in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that “prolonged sedentary time was independently associated with deleterious health outcomes regardless of physical activity."
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The studies showed that physical inactivity (the fourth-leading risk factor for death for people all around the world, according to the World Health Organization) can lead to premature death from cardiovascular issues and cancer, as well as cause chronic conditions such as Type 2 diabetes.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Too much sitting can also increase the risk of getting varicose veins. If you already have vein issues, you may notice that symptoms get worse after sitting for prolonged periods of time.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So is standing any better? Compared with the research on prolonged sitting, relatively little research has been done to study the health effects of prolonged occupational standing. The few studies that do exist have demonstrated a relationship between prolonged standing at work and various health outcomes such as elevated risk of heart disease and musculoskeletal pain.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We covered this subject in a previous issue of Vein Health News. In the article “Standing on the job: How at-risk occupations put a strain on veins,” we discussed the risks of people with jobs that keep them on their feet all day, such as teachers, hair dressers, medical professionals, and many others. We can add to that list people who work at a standing desk all day.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">From a venous standpoint (so to speak), remaining in the same position too long – whether you’re sitting or standing – leads to poor blood circulation (hydrostatic venous pressure) and blood pooling in the lower limbs, which can lead to varicose veins over time.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you do opt for a standing desk, consider using a balance board to keep you continuously contracting and relaxing your calf muscles, not to mention strengthening your core muscles. (Whether this helps with work productivity depends on the individual!)
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you choose to stick with a traditional sitting desk, an exercise ball chair, motion stool, or “wobble chair,” can provide you with the same kind of calf muscle readjustments throughout the day.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There are also adjustable desks that allow you to switch between sitting and standing positions throughout the day.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In conclusion, if you find standing desks more comfortable or effective, then by all means, use one.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Regardless of the kind of desk you use, take regular breaks from standing or sitting for extended periods of time. Set your alarm to remind you to take a brief walk, or simply do some deep knee bends, or other stretching exercises.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Perhaps the simplest circulation-promoting exercise is the calf pump. In this simple toe-tap exercise, you tap both of your feet for a minute or two, going back and forth between heels and toes. This squeezes the deep veins in the legs and forces the blood to circulate through the leg. It feels great whether you’ve been sitting or standing for a long period of time.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In 1993, the American Nurses Association declared May 6-12 as the annual week to celebrate and elevate the nursing profession. (Fun fact: May 12 is <span style="background-color: white; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Florence Nightingale's birthday!)
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The week features events all across the country to honor nurses and their work and to educate the public about nurses' indispensable role in public health.

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">At Vein Healthcare Center, we know that nurses are often on the front lines of health care, and we tip our hats to them! <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We are well aware that venous disease can be a real<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> occupational hazard for nurses who are often on their feet for hours at a time. We recently shared the story of Beth, a nurse from Maine who suffered from venous disease but eventually found relief.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">And we'll never tire of sharing these tips for how nurses can take care of themselves by taking care of their feet.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Lastly, if you're a nurse, tune into <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Nurses4Us: Elevating the Profession on Wednesday, May 8 from 1:00pm-2:00pm. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Dr. Cindy Asbjornsen, Founder of the Vein Healthcare Center, truly loves to educate people -- patients and doctors, alike -- about vein health.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Dr. Asbjornsen recently gave a community seminar at Coastal Pharmacy & Wellness in Portland, Maine, where she discussed the basics of how veins work...and what to do when they don't. And, she explained what phlebology is!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Participants asked tons of great questions, including what do do about the so-called "Economy Class Syndrome" and DVT.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Dr. Asbjornsen explained that you don't need to be in economy class (or even on an airplane) to be at risk for bad circulation. It's really about <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">sitting in the same position for too long. A long car ride, for example, can have the same effect.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Dr. Cindy's simple and practical advice for keeping your veins healthy during a lengthy car ride is three-fold. One, do the calf pump frequently (also known as "the foot pump"). Two, stay hydrated. Three, stop for restroom breaks! That will get your calf muscles moving AND give you a reason to keep drinking water during the ride.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Vein Healthcare Center runs smoothly, thanks in large part to Sarah Tremblay, VHC's Office Manager. Her role is to plan the schedule, handle insurance authorizations, and answer any questions patients may have about their coverage. Before becoming Office Manager a year ago, Sarah was Dr. Asbjornsen's medical assistant for four years. She says that after working at VHC for more than five years now, she's seen many patients improve their overall health.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There are a lot of myths about venous (vein) disease, and how to treat it. Rather than add to the confusion by repeating them here, we're happy to present these 15 facts to consider.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1. Vein problems are among the most common chronic conditions in North America.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2. Approximately half of the U.S. population has venous disease.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">3. In this country, 50 to 55 percent of women and 40 to 45 percent of men have venous disease— of these, 20 to 25 percent of the women and 10 to 15 percent of men will have visible varicose veins.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">4. Varicose veins affect one out of two people age 50 and older, and 15 to 25 percent of all adults.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">5. Every year an estimated 4.6 million U.S. work days are lost due to venous disease.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">6. Gender and age are two primary risk factors in the development of venous insufficiency.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">7. Individuals who have been pregnant more than once, have a family history, or spend a great deal of time standing increase their risk of the disease.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">8. If varicose veins are not treated, they will not go away on their own; in fact, they usually get worse over time.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">9. Without treatment, early symptoms of venous disease can lead to lipodermosclerosis, a disease of the skin and connective tissue; an increased chance of superficial venous thrombophlebitis, clotting in the superficial veins that causes severe pain; or ulceration, wounds on the leg that will not heal.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">10. Venous disease can be a factor in chronic leg cramping or restless leg syndrome.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">11. Symptoms and progression can usually be controlled with compression.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">12. Some people with venous disease present with no symptoms.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">13. Treatment can stop the progression of the disease; it can restore health and quality of life for those with early stage symptoms and for those struggling with late-stage symptoms.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">14. For most people, even debilitating symptoms are treatable.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">15. It’s critical that an evaluation involve close attention to the entire venous system, so that poorly functioning veins can be treated at the source.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Education is an important first step toward better health – and that includes your vein health!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">To learn more about the prevention and treatment of venous disease, visit a phlebologist (vein specialist) certified by the American Board of Phlebology (ABPh). <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">While many practitioners may practice vein care, a board certified phlebologist meets the ABPh’s high standard and has the knowledge, skills, and experience to provide quality patient care related to the treatment of all aspects of venous disease.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you'd like to schedule an evaluation of your vein health, contact us at Vein Healthcare Center.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Veins have one-way valves that help keep blood flowing toward the heart. If the valves are weak or damaged, blood can flow in the wrong direction in the veins in the legs and feet, often causing them to swell. When this happens near the pelvis, it is called pelvic venous congestion syndrome. Simply put, varicose can also develop internally, in the pelvis, uterus and ovaries.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Those internal varicose veins can cause symptoms similar to those in the legs. Patients will often have visible varicose veins on their upper legs or labia, but not always. The main symptom is pelvic pain that lasts for six months or more.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Patients with PVCS report a prolonged deep and dull ache, often associated with movement, posture, and activities that increase abdominal pressure. Like varicose veins in the leg, the achiness that increases with prolonged standing can often be relieved by lying flat or elevating the legs.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) occurs below the belly button in the pelvis. The pain may be unilateral or bilateral – meaning on one side of the pelvis or both – and is often more pronounced on one side than the other. The pain is chronic and appears to have no obvious source. Symptoms may also include rectal discomfort or increased urinary frequency, bloating or gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">According to some studies, more than 26% of women suffer from CPP, but data about its prevalence is incomplete. When taking into account the number of factors that could also cause chronic pelvic pain, one can see how misdiagnosis by medical professionals might occur.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Conditions range from problems in the gastrointestinal tract to gynecologic diseases and urologic abnormalities. While some of these conditions are easily diagnosed, other causes of chronic pelvic pain are extremely difficult to recognize and have often been underdiagnosed or overlooked– even though studies show that PVCS occurs in up to 30 percent of patients who have chronic pelvic pain.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Pelvic venous congestion syndrome, or PVCS, although easy to describe can be challenging to diagnose. In fact, PVCS is often misdiagnosed or never diagnosed at all.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">One of Dr. Cindy Asbjornsen's patients is a 55-year-old nurse with quite a work commute. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Beth lives in Ogunquit, Maine, but she works in California.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Beth works for a national company that provides healthcare and rehabilitation in homes and hospitals. As a district director, she oversees the clinical operations for five long-term care facilities in the East Bay. She<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> flies from Maine to California every Monday and then flies home on Friday. It takes all day to get from one coast to the other; when she’s at work, she’s on her feet for most of the day; and she’s had vein problems most of her life – a triple whammy in terms of venous health.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Like many people, Beth inherited “bad veins.” Her mother had varicose veins, and all but one of her six siblings have “pretty significant” varicose veins. Beth also has a 35-year-old son with extreme varicosities.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Over time she has experienced more and more problems with varicosities. After the birth of her second child, she had a vein stripping done and then another one in the mid 1990s. In addition, up until the last ten years, Beth has suffered from obesity. She believes that the extra weight combined with the venous insufficiency also caused edema in her legs that’s been difficult to keep in check.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“It feels like I’ve been managing this for more than 30 years,” said Beth. “And my legs are still a hot mess despite everything that’s been done to them.”
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Her occupation has exacerbated her issues, as she spends 10-12 hours on her feet during the week, paired with a commute that requires traveling for hours in a plane twice a week. Despite reducing her weight significantly and wearing compression socks daily, Beth was struggling again with achiness in her legs. By mid-afternoon the pain would be so great she’d have to “pop an ibuprofen” to get through the day.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">After going to a board-certified phlebologist for an evaluation, Beth learned about the advances in vein care since the days of vein stripping – and the importance of locating, and treating, the “leaky” vein valve at the source.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">After initial endovenous laser ablation (EVLA), Beth is no longer feeling any discomfort in her legs, however her ultrasound evaluation showed that “there was a lot of work to be done.” She has begun to wear full-length compression stockings on flights and at work, and she plans to finish her recommended treatment plan, which will include several sessions of sclerotherapy.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As Beth continues the process, she has this advice for people with similar problems: “The treatment modality is basically painless and simple. If you can get rid of the pain and edema – and the harm that the long-term edema causes – you’d be a fool not to do it.”
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“This is the year I take better care of myself.”
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Sound familiar? Every new year people resolve to quit smoking, exercise, visit the doctor, and commit to living a healthier lifestyle. There are a multitude of reasons why these are excellent resolutions, but consider one more: veins.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Vein disease affects millions of people. It occurs when valves in the veins of the legs can’t efficiently pump blood back up to the heart. Vein disease can cause pain, swelling, varicose veins, or worse. It’s also chronic and progressive, and if left untreated, can lead to serious medical complications.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">“Venous disease is one of the most common health conditions among Americans,” said Dr. Cindy Asbjornsen, Board-certified vein specialist at the Vein Healthcare Center, “but most people don’t realize that it may affect them, or that there are modern, minimally invasive treatments available.”
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Here are three things that people can do to improve— or prevent— vein problems in the new year:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">1. Quit smoking. Smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke affects veins, arteries and the entire circulatory system. It can make venous symptoms, like leg aches and pains, even worse.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">2. Exercise. This can be as simple and effective as walking just 30 minutes a day. Walking causes the rhythmic contraction of calf muscles and helps promote blood flow to the heart.

Your doctor can refer you to a Board-certified phlebologist for a screening and evaluation.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Venous disease -- including spider veins, varicose veins, and leg ulcers -- does not stop for the holidays. But don't worry! We at the Vein Healthcare Center in Maine, have some tips to help you alleviate the symptoms of vein disease and prevent them from getting worse.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As you're out and about this holiday season, DO wear loose-fitting clothing. Santa’s red suit, for example, is roomy and comfortable and wouldn’t impede circulation in his lower body.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">DO walk for at least thirty minutes a day-- like in a mall or large department store! The calf muscle contractions caused by walking can go a long way toward venous disease prevention and help keep the muscles of the lower legs healthy. And when you're out and on your feet, DO take a break every hour or so.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Now for a few DON'Ts. DON'T wear high-heeled shoes (or boots), as they shorten the muscles in your calf and prevent deep veins from working at their full capacity.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you're taking any holiday trips long distances -- by plane, train, or automobile -- DON'T forget to wear compression stockings to keep the blood in your lower limbs moving in the right direction.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This last DON'T shouldn't surprise you: DON'T smoke. Smoking (even a corncob pipe) and exposure to second-hand smoke constricts veins and affects overall circulation.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tips like these can help alleviate (or prevent) the symptoms of vein disease, but if you are experiencing symptoms, consider being screened by a Board-certified phlebologist like Dr. Cindy Asbjornsen. Contact us to schedule an evaluation appointment, or to find out more about vein health and treatment.connect@veinhealthcare.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11443588299157001885noreply@blogger.com0
