Joshua B. is a chef. Years in the restaurant business have kept him on his feet for extended periods of time, which— combined with a family history of varicose veins— was a recipe for unhealthy legs.
“I started getting varicose veins in high school, but as unsightly as they were, they never really bothered me,” said Joshua.
As the New Hampshire native got older, his veins got worse. They continued to get bigger and stay swollen for longer periods of time. Even crawling on the floor with his young kids was hard because of the varicose veins on his knees. But the self-proclaimed “tough guy” continued to live with the discomfort. When he was about 27 years old, however, he started to experience undeniable medical issues.
The skin covering Joshua’s veins gradually got thinner and thinner, especially on the insides of his ankles. Eventually the skin got so thin on the inside of his right ankle that it ruptured and began spraying blood “like a squirt gun coming out of the side of his foot,” as Joshua described it.
“It was scary. I didn’t know what to do, so I rushed to the emergency room where they gave me a Novocaine injection and stitches that stayed in for a week,” he said.
That was the first emergency. Ten months later another bleeder opened up higher up on Joshua’s right leg. He finally began to take the problem seriously
and went to two different doctors for treatment.
One physician encouraged vein stripping. The other physician advised against it but offered no alternatives. Joshua was confused: “I never really had a clear path of what to do.”
Finally, Joshua found his way to the Vein Healthcare Center. An ultrasound revealed the source of the problem, and Joshua worked with Dr. Cindy Asbjornsen on a treatment plan. He proceeded to have endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) on his right leg first, followed by his left leg two months later. Dr. Asbjornsen followed both EVLA procedures with sclerotherapy. As Joshua put it, the EVLA “dams up the river,” and then the sclerotherapy gets rid of the other streams leading up to it.
Joshua was nervous before the procedures, but found that it was a lot easier than he expected. Although his goal was to restore healthy venous return
in his legs, he’s been surprised by how much more comfortable and confident he feels.
“I’m not as apprehensive about wearing shorts and showing off my legs now, because before they were gnarly and bumpy,” he said. “They’re not Tom Brady’s legs yet, but they look much better than they did.”
Overall, the experience has been an educational one for Joshua. Once he really understood what varicose veins were and what his specific problem was, he couldn’t wait to fix it. In fact, he wishes a vein exam could be part of every general physical.
“It’s a quick thing to look at someone’s legs to see if there are varicosities. There are a lot of possible treatments, and the earlier you start the better off you are.”

Thank you, nurses!
The week features events all across the country to honor nurses and their work and to educate the public about nurses' indispensable role in public health.
At Vein Healthcare Center, we know that nurses are often on the front lines of health care, and we tip our hats to them! We are well aware that venous disease can be a real occupational hazard for nurses who are often on their feet for hours at a time. We recently shared the story of Beth, a nurse from Maine who suffered from venous disease but eventually found relief.
And we'll never tire of sharing these tips for how nurses can take care of themselves by taking care of their feet.
Lastly, if you're a nurse, tune into Nurses4Us: Elevating the Profession on Wednesday, May 8 from 1:00pm-2:00pm. Hosted by ANA, the free webinar explores Nursing Now, a 3-year global campaign to improve health by raising the profile and status of nursing worldwide.
Happy National Nurses Week to all of the nurses out there. Thank you for all you do!

One patient's perspective: coast-to-coast commute
One of Dr. Cindy Asbjornsen's patients is a 55-year-old nurse with quite a work commute. Beth lives in Ogunquit, Maine, but she works in California.
Beth works for a national company that provides healthcare and rehabilitation in homes and hospitals. As a district director, she oversees the clinical operations for five long-term care facilities in the East Bay. She flies from Maine to California every Monday and then flies home on Friday. It takes all day to get from one coast to the other; when she’s at work, she’s on her feet for most of the day; and she’s had vein problems most of her life – a triple whammy in terms of venous health.
Like many people, Beth inherited “bad veins.” Her mother had varicose veins, and all but one of her six siblings have “pretty significant” varicose veins. Beth also has a 35-year-old son with extreme varicosities.
Over time she has experienced more and more problems with varicosities. After the birth of her second child, she had a vein stripping done and then another one in the mid 1990s. In addition, up until the last ten years, Beth has suffered from obesity. She believes that the extra weight combined with the venous insufficiency also caused edema in her legs that’s been difficult to keep in check.
“It feels like I’ve been managing this for more than 30 years,” said Beth. “And my legs are still a hot mess despite everything that’s been done to them.”
Her occupation has exacerbated her issues, as she spends 10-12 hours on her feet during the week, paired with a commute that requires traveling for hours in a plane twice a week. Despite reducing her weight significantly and wearing compression socks daily, Beth was struggling again with achiness in her legs. By mid-afternoon the pain would be so great she’d have to “pop an ibuprofen” to get through the day.
After going to a board-certified phlebologist for an evaluation, Beth learned about the advances in vein care since the days of vein stripping – and the importance of locating, and treating, the “leaky” vein valve at the source.
After initial endovenous laser ablation (EVLA), Beth is no longer feeling any discomfort in her legs, however her ultrasound evaluation showed that “there was a lot of work to be done.” She has begun to wear full-length compression stockings on flights and at work, and she plans to finish her recommended treatment plan, which will include several sessions of sclerotherapy.
As Beth continues the process, she has this advice for people with similar problems: “The treatment modality is basically painless and simple. If you can get rid of the pain and edema – and the harm that the long-term edema causes – you’d be a fool not to do it.”

Before & After: Visible results from vein treatment
![]() |
| This 56-year-old VHC patient had all the typical symptoms
of venous disease, in addition to a history of
ulcers at her ankle, bleeding from her varicosities, and
a past vein stripping. EVLA treatment, followed by
five sessions of sclerotherapy, resolved all of her issues.
Many of the symptoms of venous disease are invisible to the eye, though they affect people greatly. For example, one Vein Healthcare Center patient had no pain in her legs, but they felt "like cement" at the end of the day. She couldn't move them!
For other patients, vein problems are right there on the surface.
Every single case is different so, of course, results vary. But when the source of the problem is located (using ultrasound mapping), then treatment is more likely to be effective.
Since a picture is worth a thousand words, take a look at pictures of former patients of the Vein Healthcare Center. Every person has different vein issues, and we customize a treatment plan for each individual to address his or her specific goals.
If you're ready to discuss your vein health, contact us! We're happy to answer your questions.

One Nurse's Perspective
We are close to releasing the latest issue of Vein Health News. In the process, we've interviewed several healthcare professionals who are on their feet all day; they're also patients of VHC!
Here’s what one registered nurse had to say about Dr. Asbjornsen and the staff at VHC:
“The customer service and the environment that the Vein Center provides are pretty phenomenal. There are recliners in the waiting room so you can kick back and elevate your legs. The music is great. The rooms are comfortable.
Of course, Dr. Cindy has a wonderful beside manner – that’s a plus. All of her staff is excellent. I’m never rushed. I’ve probably been in that office a number of times and I haven’t had one negative interaction.”

One of our patients says: it’s definitely worth it
It’s that time of year when many
of us review the things we’re grateful for. One of our patients is thankful for
the advances in vein treatment – and for the way her quality of life has
improved since her own treatment.
“About 15 years
ago I had my varicose veins stripped the old way – surgery. That doctor made an
incision from my thigh all the way down to my ankle. It required many stitches
and a long recovery. Back then they didn’t have the nice compression hose or
knee-highs that they do now; the hoses were thick, rubber and so uncomfortable
I stopped wearing them.
After I had my
children, a varicose vein formed in the middle of my right leg, and then a big
varicosity starting forming on my knee. Every time summer came I always made
sure to wear capri-length pants, and I hated wearing bathing suits.
I was reluctant
to get my veins treated again because of my experience with the surgery 15
years ago, but I did my research and found Dr. Asbjornsen and the Vein
Healthcare Center. I went in to talk to Dr. Cindy, and she and her ultrasound
technician took an hour to find out where the source of the problem was. They
took the time to find the source of why the varicose vein recurred in my right
leg.
I went ahead and
did the EVLA and was amazed at how fast it was – only an hour to stop the leak
at the upper groin area. I had a pretty big bruise, but I used the Arnicare
they gave me and wore my compression stockings. My thigh recovered so quickly!
Before the
treatment you could actually feel the heat of the vein through my clothes. You
could see the outline of the vein when I wore leggings, it was that bad. Now I
can wear anything I want, even shorts. It would hurt at night too, but not
anymore.
I have before
and after pictures on my phone that I show to everyone! I tell people: Hey,
just do it. It’s easy. Yeah, you have to wear stockings for a little while, but
it’s definitely worth it.
I would absolutely
recommend VHC. The whole practice was professional. They were very
understanding about making appointments and worked with me the whole way. The
doctor and her staff took a lot of time to explain the problem to me, and how
they would resolve it. I think Dr. Cindy is a really good doctor. I felt very
comfortable with her and never, ever felt rushed.”

One Patient’s Perspective
As the busy fall season kicks into high gear, we thought we'd take a minute to share a testimonial from one of our happy patients. Lucille used
to do a lot of sitting because her legs felt so heavy and swollen. But now she
walks at least 30 minutes every day!
"Dr. Asbjornsen is a
rational, competent and caring physician. That's uncommon! From the first
appointment, the doctor and her staff were very professional and continually
demonstrated how much they care for their patients. Everyone was very thorough
in educating me about each step of the process, from the evaluation to the
follow-up—and they were pleasant too.
The group at the Vein Healthcare
Center has restored my faith in the medical system. They are the cream of the
crop. They're superlative!"
